Flat Roof Extension Project, Lisburn

The Problem

The clients felt that their current kitchen was too cramped for their needs. They wanted a large, open-plan area where they could comfortably host family and friends.

The house lacked a dedicated utility area, which meant that our clients’ washing machine and dryer occupied a significant portion of their already undersized kitchen.

The absence of a ground-floor bathroom meant they had to make the trek upstairs whenever nature called.

The existing kitchen was dark and dated. The sun shone on the rear aspect of the house for most of the day, but our clients didn’t have enough windows to make the most of this natural light.

The existing kitchen, dining room, and rear sitting room were all separated by solid walls. As a result, the cook was isolated in the kitchen while the remaining family members were in the other rooms.

The Solution

We built a large flat roof extension that more than doubled the size of our clients’ existing kitchen.

We also added a spacious utility room which gave our clients a dedicated indoor space for their laundry needs, while simultaneously freeing up additional space in the new kitchen.

The new extension introduced a practical open-plan design, seamlessly connecting the kitchen, dining area, rear sitting room, and snug into a bright, roomy space. This design allowed our clients to prepare meals while sharing quality time with their family.

We incorporated three large flat roof windows, a substantial rear living room window, and two glass panelled doors. This design flooded the spaces with an abundance of natural light, making the most of the property’s south-facing rear aspect.

We also constructed a conveniently located downstairs toilet, removing the need for our clients to make the trip upstairs every time they require restroom facilities.
